I finally understand this whole setup thing now xD. You would not necessarily have to remove the sound card in your computer – they can act independently of each other, just set the output of your music player to the DAC and you would be set.

Realtek setup program will un-install the previous version Realatek audio driver on the system first. The system still doesn’t recognize that any device is being plugged in to either of these jacks.

That’s the problem that I’m trying to solve here. The fewer cables or devices outside the box, the better. The headphone cable was physically damaged; and the set of headphones was later thrown out because they had “stopped working”.
Jul 7, at 4: My current thinking is that the damaged cable caused an electrical short at the Audio Output jack, which in turn shorted out some circuitry in the audio chipset on the motherboard. It has a good DAC circuit and a decent headphone amp circuit, and is powered by the USB bus, therefore not requiring an additional power adapter.
